ISLAMABAD, Feb 21: Officials of Pakistan Embassy in Abu Dhabi are not cooperating with those of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) who are in the UAE to bring a former chairman of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) back to Pakistan for being involved in a Rs82 billion scam, according to a source.
A senior official of NAB told Dawn here on Thursday that the Pakistani ambassador invited the NAB officials who are in Abu Dhabi to his office to discuss the deportation of Tauqir Sadiq, the former chairman of Ogra, as per orders of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
However, when the NAB officials reached the embassy the ambassador declined to meet them. Instead, he asked them to meet his deputy, according to the source.
“After the cancellation of Sadiq’s visa by Abu Dhabi authorities, there’s no hurdle in the way of his deportation but this cannot be done without the cooperation of the embassy,” the NAB official said.
Some media reports, however, said the embassy officials refused to entertain the NAB team because the deportation documents had not been attested.
Sadiq is presently in the Al Wathba Prison of Abu Dhabi, the NAB official said.
On Feb 11, the Supreme Court directed the Federal Investigation Agency, ministry of interior, ministry of foreign affairs and all other authorities and their subordinate divisions and offices, whether in Pakistan or abroad, to render full and prompt assistance to the NAB in diligently pursuing the absconding accused (Tauqir Sadiq) and bringing him back to Pakistan.
