LAHORE, Feb 14: The Lahore High Court on Thursday sought a detailed reply from the Punjab government on a petition of Young Doctors’ Association seeking action against the authorities responsible for torture of young doctors and their eight-hour detention without registration of any case.

Earlier, Assistant Advocate General Faisal Zaman told the court that doctors had left patients at hospitals unattended and staged a hunger strike camp.

He said on Feb 10 the doctors had tried to sabotage the inauguration ceremony of Metro Bus System (MBS) by obstructing the way of diplomats from different countries who were invited to the ceremony.

The law officer said the activities of the doctors had forced the police to take action.

Justice Ijazul Ahsan remarked that the court would find out whether the government or the doctors took law into their hands.

He also advised the young doctors to realise their responsibilities and do not abandon the patients at hospitals.

The judge adjourned the hearing for Feb 22.

The YDA, through its counsel Noshab A. Khan, had pleaded that the police at the behest of the Punjab government ransacked a peaceful hunger strike camp staged by the young doctors outside Services Hospital, Jail Road.

The counsel said the police party tortured male and female doctors. He said many of the doctors received critical injuries and were admitted to hospital. Police also arrested the doctors and kept them in illegal detention at North Cantonment police station for eight hours without registration of an FIR, Advocate Khan added.

He prayed that a judicial inquiry into the incident should be ordered and the responsible authorities be brought to book. — Staff Reporter
