4 daily wagers gunned down

BATKHELA, Feb 11: Four workers were gunned down by an unknown assailant in the limits of Palai Levies post in Malakand protected area here on Monday.

According to Levies personnel at Palai post an armed man opened indiscriminate fire over five daily-wage workers at 10am when they were returning homes at Dargah Banda after selling bundles of their firewood at Bazdara in Malakand protected area.

As a result, two workers identified as Sardar Hussain and Amir Bahadar died on the spot while Hukamdar and Jahanzeb got serious injuries. They died while being taken to Palai hospital.

Bahadar Syed, who escaped unhurt as he hid in the nearby bushes, registered case against unknown killer at Palai Levies post. The Levies personnel reached the site and started search operation. The motive behind the attack could not be ascertained.—Correspondent

Varsity classes launched

KARAK Feb 11: Classes to different disciplines at the Khushal Khan Khattak University opened here on Monday.

Addressing a ceremony on the occasion, the vice chancellor Dr Ibrahim Khattak asked the students to strictly follow the university’s code of conduct. He resolved to make the university a quality institution of higher learning and sought support of the area people. He assured the teachers and students of all possible facilities.

Meanwhile, a minor was killed and two persons suffered serious burn injuries in a blast caused by gas leakage in a house in Terri area early on Monday.

The victim was identified as Shayan, 5, son of Qazi Hikmat Khan, the owner of the house. Local people pulled out the victims from the rubble of the collapsed room of the house. Wife of Hikmat and her two years old son were referred to Rawalpindi in critical condition.—Correspondent

Money dispute claims life

KOHAT, Feb 11: A man was allegedly shot dead by his nephew over a money dispute in Lachi tehsil on Monday, police said.Mr Mushtaq reported to police that his brother, Mr Ashfaq, went to his nephew, Qasim, and demanded return of the money he had given him in loan. But, instead of returning money, Qasim opened fire at his uncle killing him on the spot. The accused fled the area.

Meanwhile, the anti-corruption department has detected corruption of over Rs17 million in the construction of fruit and vegetable market in Kohat.

The department took action after commission agents filed a petition in the Peshawar High Court against a Kohat TMA contractor and others accusing them of leaving the work on the market halfway and fleeing to Punjab with Rs50 million, which they had invested in the market.—Correspondent

Awareness drive on motorway

PESHAWAR, Feb 11: The National Highways and Motorways Police (NH&MP) during a one-day traffic awareness drive on Monday distributed broachers, pamphlets apprising the drivers of traffic rules.

A large number of traffic police officials and vehicles were deployed a different points of the motorway during the exercise where banners inscribed with different road safety slogans were also displayed at various locations.

A huge stall had also been arranged at main toll plaza Peshawar where road safety materials were displayed for the general public.

The patrolling officers distributed pamphlets and booklets among the commuters. The officers briefed the motorists regarding the safety measures and observance of traffic laws while travelling on motorways.—Bureau Report

Cleanliness week

PESHAWAR, Feb 11: The Cantonment Board Peshawar on Monday launched a cleanliness week in cantonment area to clear choked drains and remove litter from roads and streets. A CBP spokesman said the cleanliness week would continue till Feb 18.

Additional cantonment executive officer has been assigned the duty to supervise the drive.

Pamphlets were distributed in all the areas and banners displayed on prominent places, requesting residents to extend cooperation to the staff of cantonment board in making the area clean.—Bureau Report
