Sohail-inspired composite XI rout Afghanistan

LAHORE: Sohail Tanvir excelled with a three-wicket haul before half-centuries from Awais Zia and Babar Azam led the Faisalabad-Rawalpindi Combined XI to an eight-wicket rout of Afghanistan in the one-day practice match at the Gaddafi Stadium here on Sunday.

Sohail, captaining the composite XI, grabbed two early wickets after inserting the tourists into bat after winning the toss. The left-arm Pakistan paceman scalped one more batsman to finish with three for 30 from his 10 overs as the Afghans managed a disappointing 166 all out.

Opener Shabir Noori scored 32 before Rahmat Shah struck a 78-ball 48 with one four and a six included in his innings. Mirwais Ashraf hit one six in his 32.

The Combined XI’s response to the chase got off to a great start as Awais (75) and his opening partner Babar (64) added 140.

Once both had gone, it was left to Umar Waheed (13) and Abid Ali (7) to complete the final rites.

Afghanistan will meet Pakistan ‘A’, who are led by Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi, in the first of three back-to-back unofficial One-day Internationals at the same venue on Monday.

Summarised scores: AFGHANISTAN 166 in 49.1 overs (Rahmat Shah 48, Shabir Noori 32, Mirwais Ashraf 32, Nasim Baras 19; Sohail Tanvir 3-30, Samiullah Khan Niazi 2-27); FAISALABAD-RAWALPINDI COMBINED XI 167-2 in 31 overs (Awais Zia 75, Babar Azam 64).—Agencies
