PTV and English

It is indeed heartening that PTV’s English language channel has finally hit the airwaves. The quality of programmes is worth praising. However, there is something that those who run the network should be extra careful about: the captions for names.

On one of the shows a scholar from Hungary was interviewed. Sadly her country’s name mentioned in a bracket alongside her name was spelt ‘Hungry’ which caused the tongues on the social media wag big time. Not just that, during a discussion on the first Test match between Pakistan and South Africa on PTV Sports, Dr Noman and Shoaib Akhtar were talking about the former West Indian fast bowler Joel Garner. The caption that accompanied the bowler’s name was Joel ‘Ghana ’. I mean please. Do not give the impression that this country has run out of educated people.
