LAHORE, Jan 19: Showing magnificent speed, bay filly Fair Play stormed home, an easy winner to bag the prestigious Jinnah Cup during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

Fair Play defeated another bay filly Theatre’s Dream by three and three-fourth of a length. Bay colt Muqadar finished third, another three and a quarter lengths behind while Guys And Dolls completed the frame, a distance away.

Owned by Sohrab Khan and trained by Amjad Ali II, the winner was piloted by jockey Shahid Rehman in a bold front-running style. The filly clocked one minute 13 seconds over the 1200 metres distance.

The Lahore Race Club chairman, Tariq Aziz gave away the Jinnah Cup to the winning owner amidst thunderous applause soon after this third race of the day.

Fancied bay colt, The Conqueror completed a hat trick when he won the supporting and fifth event, the Rohri Cup run over 1600 metres.

He beat bay filly Red Storm by about five lengths. Blue-roan gelding Millennium Count finished third, a length further behind while Blu’s Wendy completed the board among ten runners. This was The Conqueror’s third successive victory and the fifth during the on-going season.

Jockey Shahid Rehman once again stole the limelight by riding home three winners. He started his day with a narrow win on fancied Prime Force edging out Daring Eagle in photo-finish in the opener.

He followed it by lifting the Jinnah Cup on Fair Play in the third race. He ended the day in a blaze of glory cruising Great King to a surprise victory in the sixth and last race of the day.

Amjad Ali II sent out two winners to excel among trainers. He saddled Prime Force and Fair Play.

The LRC stewards called in riding boy Faisal and questioned him for his unsatisfactory riding on odds-on favourite Miracle in the second race. Miracle finished off the board. Not being satisfied with his explanation they warned Faisal off the track for three months.

They also stopped entries of Miracle in races till the verification of filly’s pedigree documents. It is being alleged that her pedigree has been forged.

The stewards have also started taking action against doping of race horses. In the first case detected recently when the dope tests of Fifty Six Fifty Six returned positive they have banned the entries of the gelding in races for six months. They have also warned owners and trainers to stop this malpractice forthwith otherwise face the penalty.

The second race was won by the rank outsider bay colt Chief Executive, who caused the biggest upset of the afternoon. His victory also came as a surprise for owner Munir Dar, a former international hockey star.
