LAHORE, Jan 19: The Jamaat-i-Islami has nominated Prof Abdul Ghafoor for the Senate.
The decision was taken by the central Shoora of the party at a meeting here late on Sunday night.
According to sources, the Jamaat hoped that besides other parties, the PML-Q would also support the professor due to his relations with the late Chaudhry Zahoor Elahi, who was the father of Chaudhry Shujaat Husain.
The Shoora has also finalized the names of Prof Khurshid Ahmad, Prof Mohammad Ibrahim, Dr Mohammad Faid and Murad Ali Shah as candidates for the Senate from Jamaat’s NWFP quota.
Meanwhile, JI Amir Qazi Husain Ahmad has said that Gen Pervez Musharraf may be prosecuted for sabotaging the Constitution if his three-year rule is not indemnified and the LFO not adopted by the parliament.
Speaking at a meeting of the Shoora, he said Gen Musharraf could be tried on treason charges when an independent government would come to power in the country.
He warned PML-Q leaders that they would enjoy no status in the power corridors without ensuring supremacy of the constitution and the parliament. “The Q-Leaguers must understand that ours is a common cause.”
He urged all political and religious parties to join hands against the continuing “military rule” in the country where the LFO was being declared a part of the Constitution while the National Security Council had been formally notified to oversee the parliament.
