‘In Karachi and in Sindh’

THE print and electronic media, news/current affairs anchors of both private and state-controlled TV channels, analysts, columnists, and all those who read this letter should stop writing or saying, “In Karachi and in Sindh”.

This sounds as if Karachi is a separate entity from Sindh. We often listen to news anchors reporting, “It heavily rained today in Karachi and in Sindh,” “A complete shutter-down strike was observed today in Karachi and in Sindh,” “All markets of Karachi and Sindh are thronged with people purchasing Eid items,” etc.

We don’t come across lines referring to “In Lahore and in Punjab”, “In Peshawar and in Khyber-Pukhtunkhwa,” and “In Quetta and in Balochistan”.

Why such misinformation then? Karachi was, is and will always remain a part of Sindh. We must change our approach while discussing the whole of Sindh province, including Karachi.

I request that all those concerned kindly avoid stating, “In Karachi and in Sindh,” as it is misleading.
