Displaced Kukikhels demonstrate for food

LANDI KOTAL, Jan 30: Internally displaced persons from Kukikhel tribe on Wednesday protested in Jamrud against the local political administration and Fata Disaster Management Authority for not providing them with food and other necessary goods.

Led by IDPs Committee chairman Ikramullah Jan Kukikhel, the protesters marched through the offices of the local political administration and converged on the district Bab-i-Khyber holding placards and banners and shouting slogans against the local administration and FDMA.

Mr Kukikhel told protesters that more than 2,000 families of the tribe fled homes after the Taliban occupied their land in Tirah valley in May last year but FDMA had registered only 650 of them as IDPs since.

He said the local administration had failed to provide assistance to the affected families. Mr Kukikhel said unfortunately, not a single IDP from his tribe had been accommodated at any camp nor had the relevant departments provided them with food and other necessary household items.

“Most of the displaced families are either living with host families in Jamrud or have rented houses in Peshawar,” he said. The IDPs committee chairman said the displaced families’ repeated requests to the local administration, Fata Secretariat and FDMA for food and goods had fallen on deaf ears.

He warned that IDPs from Kukikhel tribe would stage a sit-in outside the Governor’s House in Peshawar if denial of assistance continued any longer.

Meanwhile, the jirga of Bara elders and political leaders formed after the Jan 15 killing of 18 persons in Alamgudar area has complained of delay in the constitution of a judicial commission for probe into the incident.

Members of the jirga, who had gathered here on Wednesday, regretted that the sought-after judicial commission had not been formed despite repeated promises and assurances by the government over the last two weeks.
