HARIPUR, Jan 17: An inquiry is being conducted into the alleged misuse of powers and violation of rules in taking certain decisions by the Haripur Tehsil Nazim.

Sources privy to the inquiry told Dawn on Friday that the provincial government had ordered the inquiry after some office-bearers of the Haripur chapter of Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal complained that the Tehsil Nazim had violated the rules and inflicted loss on the exchequer.

The Tehsil Nazim was accused of allowing felling of over a dozen trees near the Khalabat Park without putting the work to auction through newspapers as required under the rules.

He was also accused of misusing and damaging an official vehicle, hiring a dozen of his favourites as sanitation workers, and loose administration resulting in the theft of over 600 ballot boxes from the TMA’s premises.

Sources said the inquiry team visited the Khalabat Park, determined the size and age of the trees and checked record.

According to an insider, it all started when the Tehsil Nazim had disallowed the construction of a madressah on the land meant for playground in the Khalabat Township.

The source said that a local leader of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam had taken possession of a piece of land allocated for playground and wanted to build the madressah, which was opposed by the Nazim.

The Nazim had also taken the provincial minister for local government and rural development, Sardar Idris, to the site the other day where a group of locals protested against the occupation of land by the JUI workers. The protest had annoyed the minister and workers of the ruling party.
