‘No de-silting done during canal closure’

THIS is apropos of the news report ‘No de-silting done during canal closure’ (Jan 5). The Irrigation Department was annoyed that no de-silting of canals was carried out until Jan 5 even though all canals had remained closed since Dec 25 last on account of annual cleaning.

According to the schedule, water in the canals was supposed to be released on Jan 10. However, not an inch of silt was cleared during the last 10 days even though all canals and distributaries in Sindh remained dry for the purpose.

The authorities concerned said the closure of canals was badly affecting the sowing of Rabi crops. Besides, canals would not be carrying full discharge even during the Kharif season.

Such a situation is bound to cause heavy losses to growers, particularly those living in tail-end areas, as they were likely to get no water at all.

The de-silting of canals should be carried out on a war-footing in consultation with the growers.

We appeal to the Sindh chief minister that the irrigation department should not be kept at the mercy of insensitive officials.
