NBP official held for ‘robbery’

MUZAFFARABAD, Jan 10: Police arrested an employee of the National Bank of Pakistan for his alleged involvement in a robbery in a branch of the bank earlier this month.

A gang of 11 robbers had struck the NBP Mallot branch in the district of Bagh, looting more than Rs2.3 million and killing two people. One of the robbers was also killed later in a shootout with the police.

All other accused arrested by the police by January 5 revealed that one Zulqarnain Kiani, serving in the NBP Chapri village branch in Poonch, was also part of their gang.

He had not only identified the branch for robbery but also provided all other information to them, they added.

Accused Kiani was arrested on Tuesday from the jurisdiction of district Poonch after which his physical remand has been obtained from a judicial magistrate, SP Riyaz Abbasi told Dawn on Thursday.

“The gang members had twice visited the site of the bank in the company of accused Kiani who had given them many tips,” he added.—Correspondent
