ISLAMABAD: US Senator Carl Levin (D-MI), Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), Member, Senate Armed Services Committee, visited Pakistan January 7-8, said a US Embassy press release on Tuesday.

While in Islamabad, Senators Levin and Reed met with Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, and Chief of Army Staff Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.

The press release further said that the Senators also held consultations with US Ambassador to Pakistan Richard Olson and members of his team.

The Senators' visit builds upon a series of recent high-level engagements between the US and Pakistan that seek to identify shared interests and act on them jointly.

They reaffirmed US commitment to work with Pakistan to fight terrorism, support a stable and secure Afghanistan, increase economic opportunity, and strengthen civilian democracy, tolerance, pluralism, and civil society.

Levin and Reed also expressed their condolences for the recent acts of violence that have taken so many lives across the country.
