The legislator and the law

RECENTLY one witnessed a perfect example of VIP culture at Karachi airport. There is nothing strange about it. The strange thing is that the man who behaved in a manner he was not expected to was a legislator, who is held in high esteem.

That legislator walked outside the scan gate instead of going through it. When the man in charge tried to stop him, he shot back, “Jante nahi ho?” (Don’t you know me?).

We know you because rightly or wrongly you have made your reputation by enacting the 18th Amendment. But that official who was performing his duty had nothing to do with your legal accomplishment. He didn’t know you except for the fact that you violated the law.
