Grenade attacks on police

KARACHI, Jan 5: An early morning hand grenade attack on the house of policeman in Mowachh Goth triggered a door-to-door search operation by police that also came under an attack but rounded up over half a dozen suspects, officials said.

The police added that two men riding a motorbike threw a hand grenade outside the home of police constable Abdul Razzaq that did not cause any injury but spread fear in the densely-populated low-income locality.

“The policeman was posted at the Mauripur police station and has been quite active in gathering intelligence information against drug dealers in the area,” said an official of the Mauripur police station.

“Within an hour after the attack, a heavy contingent of the west zone police cordoned off the area for a house-to-house search.More than 300 policemen took part in the hours-long operation.”

While police were busy combing the affected areas, a van of the Mauripur police station came under a hand grenade attack that left two policemen injured. The police authorities later claimed to have arrested the suspected attackers during the operation.

“We have picked up nine suspects and recovered arms, explosive and large quantity of drugs from their possession. The operation was conducted against gangs actively involved in drug peddling, money extortion and kidnapping for ransom,” said DIG (west) Asif Ejaz Sheikh.—Staff Reporter
