QUETTA, Jan 14: Law-enforcement agencies have seized over 1.4 tons of drugs and arms and ammunition from Chaghai and Makran areas, official sources told Dawn on Tuesday.

They said that acting on a tip off the personnel of the Chaghai Militia, a wing of Frontier Corps, raided Shabian area near the border with Afghanistan and recovered 700 kilogramme of morphine following an armed encounter with drug smugglers the other day.

“Morphine, brought from Afghanistan, was dumped in the area for smuggling abroad through Makran coastline,” Major Habibullah Khalid said, adding that several dozens of anti-tank mines were also recovered along-with morphine.

The smugglers after exchange of fire, taking advantage of the night, escaped to the nearby mountains, he claimed.

In another raid the officials of the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF), Turbat, raided a house in Mand Bullo area close to the Pakistan-Iran border and seized 720 kilogramme of hashish loaded in a Toyota Hilux vehicle.

“We have recovered seven automatic rifles of different calibre along with drug smuggled into Pakistani from Afghanistan,” the assistant director of the ANF, Quetta, said.

Sources claimed that drug traffickers used the Mand Bullo area, close to the Iranian border, for temporary storage of the contraband smuggled in from Afghanistan and meant for Gulf States and Europe through Iran or sea.

“We have registered a case against Seth Said Mohammed who is owner of the drugs,” ANF officials said.
