DACCA: President Mohammad Ayub Khan declared here today (Dec 24) that Pakistan still believed that plebiscite was the only solution of the Kashmir problem. “But,” he added, “we are prepared to consider any better alternative solution if Mr Nehru has it in mind.”

The President was addressing a crowded Press conference at the President’s House this evening.

The President reiterated that Pakistan wanted to live with India on friendly and honourable terms. “We want a just solution of the Kashmir problem.” Commenting on Mr Nehru’s reported proposal for having a confederation of India and Pakistan, the President said that it was not a new proposal from the Indian Premier.

As a matter of fact whenever pressure was exerted on him for solving the Kashmir problem, Mr Nehru renewed his efforts in reiterating this proposal.

The President remarked that Mr Nehru himself would be the last man to agree to such an action. It needed statesmanship, far-sightedness and magnanimity of heart to have a confederation, he added.—Agencies
