LAHORE, Jan 12: Mansoorur Rahman Khan Afridi was elected Lahore Bar Association president with a lead of 504 votes over his rival Javed Iqbal Raja who secured 872 votes.
The election results were announced at 2:10am on Sunday after a three-hour delay owing to the recounting of votes.
At the time of the announcement of results, only the winning candidates and their few supporters were present on the premises of the district courts as most lawyers had left by then after having a hectic polling day in Saturday.
There were some 4,930 lawyers registered as eligible voters for LBA election 2003.
Chaudhry Muhammad Umar Hayat Sandhu was elected senior vice-president with 1,216 votes while Muhammad Sohail with 1,096 votes vice-president. Rana Riaz Ahmad Khan had already been declared elected unopposed vice-president (Model Town seat).
Agha Faisal was elected LBA secretary. He secured 1,376 against Tahiruallah Warraich’s 1,255 votes while Rana Qamar secured 1,168 votes.
Usman Subhani was elected joint secretary. He bagged 1,194 votes against Muhammad Jameel Chaudhry who secured 1,017 votes.
Hamid Ali Rana won the office of auditor with 1,257 votes while M.S. Rana got 991 votes. Tanveer Chaudhry and Malik Irshad Ahmad Awan had already got elected unopposed for the offices of finance secretary and librarian, respectively.
A 10-member executive committee had also been elected a week before the elections through draws.
The lawyers community in the metropolis would remain busy in electioneering as the Punjab Bar Council (PBC) annual elections are scheduled for January 25.
Chaudhry Arif and Zahid Hussain Bukhari are already running their campaign for the office of PBC vice-chairman.
The annual elections of the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) would be held in the last week of February and four candidates have so far emerged for the 10 offices of LHCBA.
Talking to newsmen after his victory, Mansoorur Rahman Afridi said he would strive for getting the construction of judicial complex started at the earliest.
He claimed that the newly-elected officer-bearers of the LBA would also make efforts for bringing the scattered subordinate courts on one premises.
He attributed his win to Justice Ameer Alam Khan (retired) and advocate Sardar Latif Khan Khosa.
