Mentally-ill woman kills daughter

KARACHI, Dec 23: A 24-year-old woman, believed to be mentally ill, killed her five-year-old daughter in their home on Sunday.

The police said that the incident took place in Sector 36-B, within the remit of the Landhi police station, where Amber, wife of Amir Qadri, slit the throat of her daughter, Abrish, leaving her to die in a pool of blood. The suspect also burnt her daughter’s hair, but the police said that it wasn’t clear whether she burnt them before or after killing the girl.

There was no one else at home when the incident occurred, said the police. The father had left the house after having his breakfast and the other two children were playing outside.

According to a duty officer at Landhi police station, the incident was reported on the police helpline by Abrish’s father who came home to find his daughter dead.

Landhi SP Abdul Qayyum Pitafi said Amber had a history of mental illness. Usually, the family didn’t leave her alone, but she had been alone with her daughter on Sunday when the tragic incident happened.

Quoting her husband, the police said that Amber had been treated for psychological problems but never fully recovered.

An FIR (343/2012) was lodged at the Landhi police station under Section 302 (qatl-i-Amad) by the husband, Amir Qadri.
