LAHORE, Dec 23: Bay filly Unanimous, brilliantly ridden by ace jockey Shahid Rehman, swept to an impressive victory in the Jinnah Cup to light up a chilly Sunday afternoon during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse.
Backed at 3-2, the filly from an Irish bloodline of both sides, owned by Chaudhry Fauzi Miraj, renewed her credentials in the run for the forthcoming classic events with relatively an easy success over fellow filly Royal Fairy, also the progeny of an Irish sire in the event run over 1,600 metres.
This was Unanimous’ third consecutive win within a month.
Dark-bay filly Divine Angel finished third two-and-a-half lengths back with the odds-on favourite bay filly Right One putting up a poor show to complete the frame in the sixth race in racing order The winner clocked one minute 41 seconds.
A race earlier, bay colt Don, jointly owned by Mahmood Khan and Mian Maahir Ahmed, returned home a convincing winner in the supporting event run over 1,100 metres. The A.B. Malik-trained colt beat bay horse Enigma by over five lengths, while clocking one minute eight seconds. This was Don’s second consecutive win in a fortnight.
The racing fans had to brave cold winds sweeping across the racecourse with thick fog blanketing the whole city.
Jockey M. Hanif steered home Big Shot and Karmanwali to register a double for trainer Mohammad Afzal.
Meanwhile, the Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards have decided to hold the next Lahore Gymkhana races on Thursday, two days after the prestigious Quaid-i-Azam Gold Cup race is held in Karachi to mark the birth anniversary of Founder of the Nation, Mohammad Ali Jinnah.
The LRC further decided to hold midweek gymkhana races after every fortnight in the future on Wednesdays.
