SKARDU, Dec 22: Baltistan bar association boycotted courts and observed black day here the other day to protest delay in appointment of judges to the higher judiciary. They also demanded appointment of senior lawyers from Baltistan to the vacant posts of the supreme appellate court and the chief court.

In a resolution the Baltistan bar association demanded of the government that the vacant posts of judges in the supreme appellate court and chief court be filled according to the governance order of 2009. “The registrar of the supreme appellate court should be terminated as he was working on contract basis for the last five years,” the resolution further demanded.

The resolution said the registry of apex court in Baltistan region be made as circuit court and judges be appointed in it so that the people of the region could get easy access to justice.

The lawyers further demanded that appointment of judges on contract basis in the supreme appellate court be stopped. They also demanded setting up of banking court, tribunal court, family court and labour court in Baltistan region and that lawyers of Baltistan be given equal representation in appointment of judges in chief and appellate courts.—Correspondent
