NEW DELHI: Indications available in politician circles in Delhi confirm the allegations made by a certain political section in Pakistan that a Western Power has recently sponsored the idea that the two Wings of Pakistan be separated into different autonomous units and made to join India in some kind of confederation.

The Western Power, it is believed in these circles, has the blessings of Indian Prime Minister Nehru in sponsoring the idea.

Mr Nehru’s remarks in a recent interview to the Washington Post in reference to the forthcoming Indo-Pakistan talks on Kashmir that “a confederation remains our ultimate goal” are being considered very significant.

Meanwhile, the Indian approach to the forthcoming talks has completely crystallised following comments by the Indian Press and political leaders in the last week and now it can be said with almost complete certainty that Pakistan will be faced with a dilemma at the talks.

The American Government, which is mainly responsible for bringing India and Pakistan together at the conference, according to a USIS Press release, feels that “a possible solution would be an agreement whereby both the countries would have access to the valley “avoiding strictly territorial claims”. —Delhi Correspondent

Nehru shocks Pakistan

MR Nehru’s disclosure that his ultimate aim was a confederation of India and Pakistan caused an unprecedented wave of resentment throughout Pakistan yesterday.

Mr Z.A. Bhutto, Central Minister for Industries and Natural Resources and leader of the Pakistan delegation to the proposed Indo-Pakistan talks, said in Dacca that he was surprised at Mr Nehru’s statement which was designed to prejudice the Kashmir issue.—Staff Correspondent
