ISLAMABAD, Dec 21: National Assembly Standing Committee on Capital Administration and Development on Friday took exception to the behaviour of the federal police with common man and complainants when they came to them for relief and corruption in their rank and file.
The meeting was chaired by Jamshaid Ahmed Dasti and attended by Chaudhry Asghar Ali Jatt, Shaheen Shafiq, Seema Mohiuddin Jameeli and Mohammad Rehan Hashmi.
The members said the check posts, where corruption is rampant, nedded to be reduced. From these check posts no goods truck could pass without greasing the palm of the police personnel deployed there, they said adding majority of policemen were drug addicts.
SHO cannot be posted without the approval of influential person, they maintained.
Jamshaid Ahmed Dasti said a truck coming from Muzaffargarh could not reach Islamabad fruit and vegetable market without paying Rs1,500 to Rs3,000 to police personnel at different check posts from his city to capital.
“According to my estimates, police collect Rs20 million in one night, and this is one of the causes of rising prices of commodities. The number of police check posts should be reduced and officials of good repute should be appointed there,” he said.
Seema Mohiuddin Jameeli of PML-N, however, took up the suspension of Industrial Area Police SHO Mohammad Shafiq Mirza and Superintendent of Police (SP) Khurram Rasheed. On the Supreme Court intervention, the SP was restored, she added.
Both were suspended for registering FIR under section 489-F against former Deputy Director General Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Maj Gen (retired) Nusrat Naeem on charges of fraud on November 26, on the instructions of additional session judge Muhammad Azam Khan.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Bani Amin Khan said that SP was restored on the instructions of the Supreme Court but there were some complaints against the SHO hence he could not be restored.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Yaseen Farooq also confirmed that there were complaints against the SHO and said that Maj Gen (retired) Nusrat Naeem and the citizen had reached a patch-up.
The IGP also raised the issue of political interference in transfer and posting of police personnel.
