Injured polio worker dies

PESHAWAR, Dec 20: While a team of anti-polio campaign escaped a gun attack in Multan on Thursday, a vaccinator injured in a suspected militant attack a day earlier died here in the Lady Reading Hospital.

Twenty-year old Hilal Ahmed had suffered a bullet injury in his head in the suburbs of Peshawar.

He is the ninth member of anti-polio teams to have died this week in the country while administering vaccine to children.

His uncle Mohammad Iqbal said he had been on ventilator since his admission to the hospital and had died in the morning.

Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Barrister Masood Kausar said the teams of vaccinators were engaged in a sacred mission of protecting the new generation from the crippling disease and helping the nation to get rid of the stigma of being among a few in the world where polio virus still existed.

Our Staff Correspondent in Multan adds: Police arrested a man accused of firing at anti-polio campaign workers on Thursday.

Lady health workers Nabila Yasmin and Asiya Bibi of Makhdoom Rasheed Rural Health Centre informed police that they had seen two armed men at the corner of a street when they were vaccinating children in the Ghauspura locality, with one of them pointing a gun at them.

They turned back to the street they had covered and then they heard a gunshot.

Shah Rukn-i-Alam police identified the accused as Mohsin and Mulazim Hussain and registered a case on the complaint of the health workers and arrested Mohsin.
