HYDERABAD, Dec 18: A convention of the Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association (SPLA) has demanded that the Sindh government end unrest among teachers by issuing a notification regarding the already accepted demands of teachers like upgrade of their posts.

Held at Muslim Science College of Hyderabad on Tuesday, the convention adopted many resolutions, calling upon the provincial government to accordingly dispose of cases of college teachers for promotion of grade 18, 19, 20, pending since 2010.

It demanded that a notification regarding time-scale should be issued and college teachers in Sindh should be promoted on the pattern of Punjab under the four-tier formula. All 3,000 upgraded posts should be made part of budget books by the finance department to avoid any issue of schedule of new establishment (SNE). Those who spoke on the occasion included SPLA’s outgoing president Athar Mirza, Mazharuddin Jatoi, Ghulam Mustafa, Mumtaz Leghari, Prof Siddique, Prof Ibrahim.

Athar Mirza presided over the first session of the convention.

The speakers said problems of college teachers in Sindh were not solved, although the Punjab government had allowed promotions under the four-tier formula in May.The Sindh government avoided even routine promotions, which had caused unrest among teachers, they added.

They urged the president, the chief minister and the provincial education minister to resolve all issues of teachers.

The second session was chaired by newly-elected president Prof Ali Murtaza.

Other newly-elected office-bearers of the SPLA include senior vice-president of Karachi Prof Karim Narejo, vice-president of Hyderabad Rasool Bux, vice-president of Sukkur Prof Shafqat Jokhio, vice-president Nasira Khatoon, secretary general Prof Mohammad Siddique Unnar, additional secretary Prof Noor Ahmed Jinjhi, joint secretary of Karachi Prof Khalid Mughal, Mohammad Shahid Sheikh joint secretary of Hyderabad, joint secretary of Sukkur Khalil Bhutto, joint secretary Rukhsana Mughal, finance secretary Mohammad Hassan Baloch, press secretary Anwar Saghar Kandhro and social and culture secretary Mumtaz Mirbahar.

Oath-taking ceremony of the newly-elected body was also held. The new body is elected for year 2013-14.
