LAHORE, Dec 17: A Punjab University alumni on Monday sought intervention of the Punjab Assembly over what he called turning his Alma Mater into a ‘marriage hall’.

PML-Q forward bloc MPA Sheikh Allauddin complained to the house that commercialism was on the rise in the Punjab University.

Asking the speaker to pay a visit to the PU IER department, boys’ hostel and grounds and see they had been ruined.

“The administration has turned the varsity’s new campus into a marriage hall and nobody is bothered about it,” Mr Allauddin deplored.

Parliamentary Secretary Tahir Sindhu said the PU syndicate was authorised to allow use of PU land for marriage ceremonies, adding this was being done to enhance varsity income.

The speaker, however, disposed of Mr Allauddin’s privilege motion.

Meanwhile, three call attention notices were tabled to draw the house’s attention to the deteriorating law and order in Punjab.

PPP’s Akhtar Malik said a young bus conductor was killed in police custody, demanding strict against the DPO concerned so that an example could be set.

Law Minister Rana Sanuallah said a case had been registered against the ASI responsible for the murder of the conductor, Asif.

PPP’s Sajida Mir sought detail of the police investigation into the murder of an ASI outside the Chuhng training centre. Sana said it was not ‘target killing’ as the investigation was underway.

PML-Q’s Khatija Omar said Gujranwala board’s superintendent was killed by robbers. Sana denied he was killed by robbers, saying the killers had not taken away anything from the victim and his wife.

During Question Hour, the financial health of the Bank of Punjab was discussed. Parliamentary secretary Abdul Waheed said bank recovery of Rs73 billion was underway.
