ISLAMABAD, Dec 13: Though Khurram Rasheed has been restored on the post of the superintendent of police (SP) Industrial Area, he has been restrained from investigating the fraud case against a former army general, Dawn has learnt.

On November 26, an FIR was registered against Maj-Gen (retired) Nusrat Naeem, a former deputy director general of Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), for giving a Rs56.55 million cheque to a citizen, Mohammad Ali, which was dishonoured. The case was registered on the directives of additional district and sessions judge Mohammad Azam Khan.

When the SP Rasheed dared to arrest Nusrat Naeem on the court orders, his services were handed over to the Established Division.

However, in the meantime, the chief justice of Pakistan took suo motu notice of the matter, forcing the government (ministry of interior) to reinstate Mr Rasheed on thepost.

A police officer on the condition of anonymity told Dawn that though the SP had been restored, it had been decided that the case would be given to the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA).

“The SP has been instructed by the police high-ups not to proceed on this case, because it is being handed over to some other investigation agency,” he said.

He added: “It seems that high-ups of the ministry of interior have decided to put the file under wraps and that is why they have not applied for the remand of the accused,” he said.

When contacted, SP Khurram Rasheed said the case was no more with him so he was not authorised to comment.

He said he had received directives from the higher authorities not to pursue the case. However, he refused to give details.

Inspector General of Police Bani Amin Khan said he was not aware whether the case had been withdrawn from Khurram Rasheed and being handed over to any other investigation agency.
