MQM activist among six killed in city

KARACHI, Dec 11: An activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and five others were shot dead, including one apparently in a sectarian attack, in different parts of the city on Tuesday.

Police said that Nadeem Abbasi was targeted at a roadside eatery near Christian Quarters, Jamshed Road No 1, in a drive-by shooting. The wounded man was rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he died during treatment, said an official at the Jamshed Quarters police station.

The police investigators later collected eight spent bullet casings of 9mm pistol from the crime-scene.

Father of four, the deceased was an active worker of the MQM unit 56, the police said.

Following the killing, tension gripped the entire locality of Jamshed Road where armed men fired into the air forcing closure of shops and other businesses.

‘Sectarian’ attack

In Orangi Town, a man was killed and another was wounded near a mosque in what police described as a sectarian attack on Tuesday night.

Zaheer Hussain and Hashmat Ali sustained gunshot wounds when armed men riding a motorbike fired at them outside Salman Farsi mosque in Toori Bangash Colony, said an official at the Iqbal Market police station.

Both victims were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where Mr Hussain was pronounced dead on arrival and Mr Ali was admitted for treatment, the official said.

“The attack appeared to be sectarian in nature as the victims were Shia Pakhtuns, hailing from Kohat,” said DIG (west) Javed Odho.

Following the shooting, tension gripped the locality with closure of shops and markets. Reports of intermittent firing were received from the area.

Two killed inNew Karachi

Two motorcyclists were killed and a teenager was wounded in New Karachi, police said.

The officials added that the two men riding a motorbike were passing through Sector 5-J of New Karachi when they were targeted near Allahwali Chowrangi within the remit of the Bilal Colony police station.

An 18-year-old boy playing by the roadside also sustained a gunshot wound and was rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he was admitted for treatment, the police said.

“Said to be freelance journalists working for a website, the victims have been identified as Aslam Qaimkhani and Nadeem Bengali,” SP New Karachi Syed Salman Hussain told Dawn.

Till the filing of this report, investigation was under way to verify their credentials.

According to the police, Aslam Qaimkhanai was a resident of Sector 5-J, New Karachi, while Nadeem lived on Abul Hasan Ispahani Road.

Man killed in oldcity area

A young man was killed in the old city area of Dhobi Ghat within the remit of the Pak Colony police station, officials said.

They added that the attackers also took away a motorcycle of the victim, later identified as Akash Lal, 22, who died while being shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

The police said the victim was a CNG mechanic of auto-rickshaws and was said to be an MQM sympathiser.

Man shot dead  in Lyari

Earlier on Tuesday morning, an auto rickshaw driver was killed in Lyari, police said.

They added that armed men riding a motorbike opened fire on an auto rickshaw on Ahmed Shah Bukhari Road within the remit of the Kalri police station, killing its driver, Ali Abbas Khan, 32.

The police shifted the body to the Civil Hospital Karachi for medico-legal formalities.

The victim was a resident of Old Golimar area and hailed from Larkana.

The police suspected that the killing could be a result of a family feud. They quoted the victim’s father as saying that the family had a feud in their native area.
