SUKKUR, Jan 9: A shutter-down strike was observed in Kandhkot on Thursday against the deteriorating law and order situation.

More than 50 rice mills also remained closed on the appeal of the Jacobabad Shehri Ittihad.

The owners of the rice mills have reportedly received letters from bandits, threatening them with dire consequence if they did not pay extortion money.

Some miscreants had fired rockets on the Krishan Milky Rice Mills a few days back and had threatened the owners of the rice mills if they did not pay them money, they would not be allowed to run their mills.

A sense of fear has gripped the area also due to frequent incidents of kidnapping.

PROTEST: A group of activists of the Sukkur Shehri Ittihad continued their protest for the fourth consecutive day by staging a sit-in at the Clock Tower Chowk in Sukkur on Thursday.

They are protesting against lawlessness, use of low quality material in development works and appointment of corrupt police officers at different police stations.

Talking to the protesters, the Ittihad leaders, Maulana Ubaidullah Bhutto, Syed Imran Ali and others criticized the authorities for their failure to resolve public problems.

They alleged some police officers, in collusion with the drug mafia, were running drug dens in the city.

They said the Ittihad would launch a protest movement on Jan 11.

WATER SHORTAGE: The closure of canals of the Sukkur Barrage since Jan 7 has caused an acute shortage of drinking water in Sukkur and Rohri.

The canals will remain closed till Jan 24.

SHOT DEAD: A man, Piral Ranjhoo, allegedly shot Abdul Sattar dead in Shah Khalid Colony on the suspicion that he had illicit relations with the wife of his brother.

Ranjhoo opened fire on Sattar when he saw him with his brother’s wife, killing him on the spot.

The woman escaped unhurt by scaling the adjoining public school wall.

The school guards, later, caught hold of Ranjhoo and handed him over to the police.

The police have also taken the woman into custody.
