MQM, PPP men rejoin cabinet

KARACHI, Dec 2: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad administered the oath to three ministers — Syed Murad Ali Shah, Sadiq Ali Memon and Khwaja Izhar-ul-Hasan — at a ceremony held at the Governor’s House on Sunday.

Syed Murad Ali Shah and Sadiq Ali Memon of the Pakistan People’s Party were allocated the portfolios of the finance and the technical education and vocational training authority, respectively, while Khwaja Izhar-ul-Hassan of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, who had been an adviser to the chief minister, was made a minister in the cabinet.

Murad Ali Shah was also given an additional portfolio of electric power and energy, including hydel, thermal, oil and gas electricity (excluding coal-based energy and alternative energy).

Murad Ali Shah and Sadiq Ali Memon (not Sajid Memon as erroneously had been mentioned in yesterday’s report) resigned from the cabinet and the Sindh Assembly with Mohammad Raza Haroon, Dr Mohammad Ali Shah, Abdul Moeed Siddiqui and Syed Askari Taqvi of the MQM on Nov 30, the last date for filing declaration on an affidavit to the Election Commission about their dual nationality.

According to a notification issued by the services, general administration and coordination department, Mohammad Raza Haroon, who was the information technology minister before resigning from the cabinet, and Dr Syed Mohammad Ali Shah, who was the sports minister, has now been made an adviser and a special assistant to the chief minister with the same portfolios with the status of a minister.

It is also learnt that Syed Haider Abbas Rizvi of the MQM was also appointed adviser to the chief minister.

Syed Murad Ali Shah and Sadiq Ali Memon, no more members of the Sindh Assembly, were inducted in the cabinet as ministers under Rule 9 of Article 130 of the Constitution of Pakistan, which says: “A minister who for any period of six consecutive months is not a member of the provincial assembly shall, at the expiration of that period, cease to be a minister and shall not before the dissolution of that assembly be again appointed a minister unless he is elected a member of that assembly.”
