Political will is missing

Published November 27, 2012

PAKISTAN’S constitutional and bureaucratic institutions have been politicised. We have corruption, poverty, a bad law and order situation, sectarian violence, and now terrorism spreading from mountains to cities. The people who gave votes to their representatives in a hope for prosperity are exactly the ones who are suffering.

We know the disease but we are not willing to cure it. The issue is not deweaponisation; the fact is that if the institutions work properly there will be no need to deweaponise the country.

If there is political will, every individual and institution will ultimately perform better.

Therefore, the key to success is depoliticising the institutions and making them accountable.
