CHAKWAL, Nov 19: Awami Workers Party (AWP), a party formed with the recent merger of three leftist parties, vowed on Monday to contest in the upcoming general elections from every constituency.
This was said at a public meeting of the party in Talagang, where party leaders addressed political workers.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Hassan Nasir, Senior Vice President AWP said that Pakistan today stands at a crossroads, unlike anything in its 65-year history.
The institutions of the state are fragmenting, and often completely at odds with one another. Democratic institutions remain weak and underdeveloped, in comparison with the military establishment and civil bureaucracy.
Finally the state continues to maintain a confrontational and interventionist posture with its neighbours, which serves only to isolate Pakistan and exacerbate internal divisions.
Dr Asim Sajid, party organiser for Punjab said that the delivery of basic services such as health, education, transport, housing and drinking water had effectively been handed over to profiteers with personal links to state functionaries. Justice remains a pipedream. Both imperialist powers and religious militants constitute a constant threat to life, livelihood and indigenous culture.
Agha Abdul Sattar, party organiser for Punjab said on the occasion that the problems of all the working class, whether they are from Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab are the same.
Working classes must unite, so that a lasting social and political change for the benefit of the working class could be brought about.
Mr Ayub Malik, another party organiser said that the divisions within Pakistani society are quickly becoming irreconcilable.
Conflicts along class, ethnic, sectarian, gender and other lines seem to be getting more acute. Violence is commonplace and the culture of tolerance and harmony that had persisted for thousands of years in the region was marginalised.
He announced that AWP would field its candidates in all the constituencies of Chakwal against Sardars and feudal lords.
During the meeting, office bearers for District Chakwal and Tehsil Talagang were also elected.
