Lawyers press for rescue of missing colleague

TOBA TEK SINGH, Nov 17: Lawyers boycotted courts in the district on Saturday in protest at police failure to rescue Gojra senior lawyer Chaudhry Manzoor Akhtar missing since Wednesday.

District Bar Association President Amer Nadeem Sidhu said at a meeting if their colleague was not rescued, they would come to the streets.

The family of the kidnapped lawyer says Akhtar left his house for the Gojra courts on Wednesday morning and never returned.

Later, his motorcycle, glasses and waistcoat were found by the Dijkot police in Faisalabad along the Gogera branch canal on Tuesday.

Gojra Bar Association President Mian Naseer Ahmad and General-Secretary Malik Muhammad Saleem condemned the alleged kidnapping of the lawyer and said police had done nothing to recover the lawyer. Mr Saleem said they would request the Punjab Bar Council for a province-wide call for strike.

A Gojra city police official said they were probing into the case.

ACCIDENT: A man from Sahiwal died and his daughter injured seriously on Saturday in Kamalia area.

Deceased Muhammad Zafar of Kassowal was on his way to his home town from Kamalia by his motorcycle along with his minor daughter. When he reached near Kamalia bypass on Kamalia-Chichawatni Road, a wagon hit his bike. He died on the spot while his daughter received severe injures.

She was shifted to the Chichawatni tehsil headquarter hospital.

DUTY: Besides the police and volunteers, army jawans may be called for Muharram related duties in Toba Tek Singh district, District Police Officer Ahsan Younis said in Kamalia.

He said 21 places had been declared sensitive regarding security point of view in the district. He said volunteers had been specially trained by police’s special branch.—Correspondent
