Just like eating healthy, fitness too is an extremely important aspect of our life. Sadly, as a nation whose favourite past-time happens to be watching sports rather than playing them, the importance of exercise is seldom realised. It is easy to admire the well-built physique or well-toned body of actors and actresses but the amount of effort these people put in their daily workouts is undoubtedly rigorous and intense. Unfortunately, in our case, we often enter the workout place with a less than positive attitude about our workout and rarely stick to the regimen for long.
Regular exercise helps develop stronger heart muscle and lungs, promotes better oxygen flow and weight loss and reduces the risk of many diseases, such as diabetes, etc. However, we choose the easy way out and buy supplements because that is how most health organisations sell their products — by making you believe that popping a pill or drinking a concoction will burn as many calories as thirty minutes on a running machine.
The information about fitness, exercise and diet plans you find in the marketplace and on the internet is wholesome, but do not be fooled by gimmicks. For instance, if you go through a year’s worth of fitness magazines, you will be surprised to see that the same people have promoted several different routines and several different supplement programmes. Why? To keep you confused and to keep you spending your money.
At the end of the day there is just one person responsible for your fitness — you. And there is no easy, effortless way to get fit; regular exercise is the only way to go.
A simple way of looking at it is like this. Think of your body as your vehicle taking you through the journey called life. Think of how you take care of your vehicle that gets you around town. Most of us dream of the day when we can own a really nice car and when we finally get one we make sure to take exceptional care of it, changing oil frequently, performing regular maintenance and driving it with utmost care. Why? For its long life, obviously. Now, look at how you knowingly abuse the vehicle taking you through life.
Quit overanalysing how you will begin, what you will do and where you will do it, just begin. Start. Without exercise all other things such as positive attitude, the defining of beliefs and the strength to face adversity that all successful people have will be reduced to nothing but words, and words without action are nothing but dust.
