MQM activist among eight killed across city

KARACHI, Nov 5: Eight people, including an activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, were killed in separate incidents across the city on Monday, police said.

The MQM activist was killed and his associate was wounded in a targeted attack in Orangi Town, police said.

They added that Mohammad Rashid, 30, and Sabiruddin sustained gunshot wounds in a drive-by shooting in Gulshanabad, Sector C of Orangi Town No 1, and were rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where Rashid was pronounced dead while Sabir was admitted for treatment.

The police said that the attackers wearing helmets were riding a motorbike.

Following the incident, tension gripped parts of Orangi Town and traders pulled down shutters.

Orangi Town SHO Zulqarnain said that the victim was a factory worker and member of the MQM Unit 131.

The officer described the incident as an act of targeted killing.

Labourer shot deadA labourer was killed inside his house in Keamari, police said.

They added that armed men barged into the house of Rustam Gull, 32, situated on Umar Khan Road near Massan Chowk, and shot at him before fleeing.

The victim was rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), where he was pronounced dead.

The police said that the victim hailed from Haripur district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and used to live alone in his Keamari house.

The police said that the victim did not belong to any political party though a spokesman for the Awami National Party claimed that the deceased was a party sympathiser.

Man killedA 40-year-old man was gunned down near his house in Usmanabad within the remit of the Garden police station, officials said.

The police said that armed men riding a motorcycle killed Khalid Khan near his house in Street No 4 of Usmanabad.

A senior police officer of the area said that the victim was an employee at a private firm.

A duty officer of the Garden police station said that the victim used to hang around with some MQM workers.

Man shot deadA Mauripur resident was killed after being kidnapped in Nazimabad early Monday morning, officials said.

They added that armed men brought the victim on a two-wheeler and shot him in the face after making him stand on the road near Inquiry Office within the remit of the Gulbahar police station.

DSP Iftikhar Lodhi said that the victim was identified as Mohammad Irfan, 23, a resident of Musharraf Colony.

“The victim had come to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital sometime early Monday morning to identify the two bullet-riddled bodies found in the Mewashah graveyard late Sunday night. He met someone at the hospital before returning home, but got kidnapped on his way,” the DSP added.

‘Robber’ kills manA young man was killed while resisting an armed robbery attempt in a shantytown in Surjani, police said.

The officials added the young victim was shot at and wounded when he resisted surrendering his cellphone to an armed motorcyclist in Sector 7-B of Surjani.

The victim was rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he died during treatment.

Couple stabbed to deathIn Hyderabad Colony, a couple was stabbed to death and their daughter was wounded inside their third-floor apartment on Monday evening, police said.

The police said that the attackers barged into the apartment in Daccan Heights within the remit of the Jamshed Quarters police station and stabbed Salahuddin, 57, his wife Tahira, 45, and their daughter Sumaiya, 25, with a kitchen knife and fled.

All the three were rushed to the Civil Hospital Karachi where the couple died during treatment, while their daughter was admitted, said DSP Qaiser Ali Shah.

“The attackers tried to give an impression of robbery but the incident was the result of some personal enmity,” said DSP Shah, adding that the police had also found some clues to the attackers.

Boy killed in celebratory fireA young boy was killed and two others were wounded during a celebratory fire at a wedding ceremony late Sunday night in Liaquatabad, police said.

The officials added that the incident took place at Rajput marriage hall in Bandhani Colony during a wedding ceremony being held within the remit of the Liaquatabad police station.

The police said that Mohammad Nabeel, 10, sustained a fatal gunshot wound and died on the spot while two other boys, Abdul Malik, 12, and Rashid, 10, were rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where they were admitted for treatment.

Later, the police rounded up six persons from the marriage hall.

DSP Wajahat Hussain said that the victim’s family declined to lodge an FIR, citing that they didn’t want any legal action.
