LAHORE, Oct 31: Two former presidents of the Supreme Court Bar Association have objected to SC’s involvement in ‘petty’ issues of CNG and sugar prices.
SCBA former president and PPP Senator Aitzaz Ahsan said consumers of petrol got no benefit after the apex court’s order for CNG prices. The decision in sugar case was also not in favour of the country’s economy, he added.
He was talking to media persons at Lahore registry of the SC where he came to cast his vote in annual election of the Supreme Court Bar Association.
He said the judiciary was independent but the judges of the Supreme Court were not the absolute.
He hailed many verdicts of the Supreme Court including the Asghar Khan case. He said however the court passed many wrong verdicts too.
He said the decision in the Asghar Khan case was a good omen but fair investigation was necessary. The verdict had closed the doors for dictatorship in the country, he added.
Ahsan expressed his reservations about suo motu notices saying in such cases the defendant party lost right to appeal.
On the occasion, SCBA’s former president Asma Jahangir also spoke to the media and said the Supreme Court was not fulfilling all requisites of justice. She said flatterers were being appointed as judges in the superior courts. She demanded a strict merit policy for appointment of judges.
Ms Jahangir also criticised the SC decision on CNG and sugar prices saying if the judiciary remained stuck to gas and sugar prices, who would dispense justice to commoners.
