About 25 kilometres in the atmosphere is a thin layer of ozone that protects Earth from the Sun’s ultraviolet rays.

A hole in the ozone layer has been created over Antarctica, due to ozone depleting chemicals in the atmosphere, which have been produced by industry, for example CFCs.

CFCs were used in fridges, aerosol cans and fast food packaging but they are now banned.
