LAHORE, Jan 2: Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi approved on Thursday an amendment to the Local Government Ordinance, 2001, disallowing no-confidence motion against district Nazimeen till June 30.

The amendment is being introduced in line with a decision by the previous federal cabinet which was taken during its November 6 meeting.

The Musharraf government had earlier disallowed the no-confidence against the Nazimeen for one year.

Officials said the time limit was being extended for another six months because of friction between district Nazimeen and their deputies at several places.

Those apprehending the no-confidence motions had too demanded the extension in the time and would have heaved a sigh of relief, they said.

Meanwhile, the chief minister approved the extension during a meeting which was attended by senior officials of the provincial government.

Mr Elahi said the decision would remove uncertainty and confusion among the Nazimeen who would perform their duties with full confidence and dedication.

The chief minister reiterated that his government believed in the continuation of the system and expressed the hope that members of the assembly and the district governments would work together for the alleviation of the lot of the people.

Earlier, during a meeting with some MPAs he said the assembly members would take part in the development activities in the province besides performing their basic job of legislation. The role of MPAs in the development projects was important.

He said it was the duty of the legislators to monitor the working of provincial administration to quicken tempo of their working. He urged them to rise above the considerations of parochialism, biradarism and regionalism, and serve the people.

FAROOQ LEGHARI: Millat Party president Sardar Farooq Leghari called on Chief Minister Elahi to “discuss inclusion of his partymen, mainly Jahania Gardezi, in the provincial cabinet.”
