Woman MPA shot at, wounded

KARACHI, Oct 19: A Sindh Assembly member belonging to the Pakistan People’s Party was shot at and wounded in a DHA locality on Friday, police said.

They said that Kulsoom Akhtar Chandio suffered a gunshot wound in the thigh when she was visiting a shop near the Punjab traffic intersection.

The lawmaker was first taken to the Civil Hospital for treatment but later went to a private hospital in Clifton.

“The circumstances in which she was wounded are not yet clear,” said additional IG of Karachi Iqbal Mehmood.

“She went inside the shop near Punjab Chowrangi and after five to 10 seconds she rushed back asking the driver to take her to hospital saying that she had been shot,” said the AIG quoting the driver.

The bullet grazed her leg, but no one at the crime scene heard the gunshot, said the city police chief.

The police believed that the lawmaker was wounded when she came out of the shop.

There was also a dispute between the Defence and the Gizri police stations over the jurisdiction of the crime scene.

The legislator, sent to the Sindh Assembly by the PPP on a seat reserved for women, hails from Dadu.
