Amir, unseeded Abdullah reach squash semi-finals

KARACHI, Oct 18: Unseeded Abdullah Bashir of Punjab continued his brilliant run while making his way into the boys’ under-19 semi-finals of the sixth DG Rangers Sindh international junior open squash championship at the Sindh Rangers Jahangir Khan Complex here on Thursday.

Abdullah, who the other day eliminated fourth seed Kashif Asif, recovered from two games down to turn the tables on province-mate Salman Hashmi in a thrilling battle 7-11, 4-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-7 to join top three in the semis.

Top seed Mohammad Amir Farhan bin Impandir from Malaysia inflicted a 13-11, 11-8, 11-8 defeat on Babrak Khan of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Second seed Asim Khan was quick to win 11-4, 11-8, 11-2 against Hamza Imtiaz in an all-Punjab clash while third seed Abbas Shaukat (PAF) prevailed over department mate Ismail Rauf 12-10, 11-8, 11-5.

Meanwhile, top seeds including three Malaysians completed the quartet in the boys’ under-17.

Fourth seed Ahsan Ayaz of the PAF lived up to his billing while overcoming unseeded Andrew Lee Jia Hao (Malaysia) in a marathon battle that went to full distance. His 6-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-4, 11-9 triumph avoided an all-Malaysian semi-finals.

Meanwhile, two seeded players made their exit in the girls’ under-19 quarter-finals. Outsider Saadia Gul pulled off the biggest upset when she shocked top seed Zahab Kamal Khan 11-8, 11-5, 11-6 while fourth seed Habiba Khan retired hurt after conceding the two games 7-11, 6-11 to Amna Latif.

Sri Lanaka’s second seed Fathmous Issadeen advanced into last four by getting the better of Kainat Liaquat (Punjab) 11-5, 11-5, 11-4.
