ISLAMABAD, Oct 11: Journalists covering the National Assembly and the Senate on Thursday staged a token walkout to protest against a firing incident on a fellow journalist.

Earlier in the day, unidentified persons at Faisal Avenue, near Zero Point, fired two shots at Tariq Nadeem, from NNI News Agency, when he was on his way to his office. Luckily they missed and Mr Nadeem walked away from the incident unscathed.

Talking to Dawn Mr Nadeem said that four persons were in a car and three of them were seated in the back. The man seated in the middle was wearing a uniform of the Punjab Police, he added.

Later he approached the Margalla police and lodged a complaint against the attackers, he added.

He suspected that the police of his native town of Mianwali and persons with whom he had a dispute were behind the attack.

It all started during his last visit to his hometown Mianwali, where he had spotted a few tyres on the street adjacent to the house of a relative. He made a request to his neighbour cum relative to remove them, fearing the possible outbreak of dengue through the tyres.

However, the relatives made it an ego issue. And a few days later lo and behold raided his house with the police and abused his family. Later a case was also registered against his family, in response of a fake complaint.

His brother, also a journalist, affiliated with a TV channel, along with local journalists approached the District Police Officer of the area, which led in the dismissal of the Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of the police, who had participated in the attack at his house.—Staff Reporter
