Malik Riaz contempt case: SC appoints prosecutor

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday appointed Barrister Mohammad Jamil as the prosecutor in the contempt of court case against real estate tycoon Malik Riaz on Tuesday, DawnNews reported.

A two-judge bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, which has been hearing the case against Riaz on charges of levelling harsh allegations against Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry at a press conference rejected a petition filed in the court seeking to add Riaz’s name on the Exit Control List (ECL) and appointed Barrister Mohammad Jamil as the prosecutor in the case.

During the hearing, Justice Khan remarked that the prosecution’s lawyer would act in accordance with the law and that the issue should not be blown out of proportion.

The court had exempted Riaz from appearing for the today's hearing.

The defendant’s lawyer, Dr Abdul Basit, requested the court to exempt his client from appearing for the next hearing as well.

Justice Khan said exemption from the next hearing would be granted after the arguments of all parties have been heard.

The court also rejected a petition filed by former president of the Islamabad Bar Association Ashraf Gujjar seeking to add the Bahria Town owner’s name on the ECL.

In his remarks, Justice Khan said that Riaz had returned from London on the court's show-cause notice.

Subsequently, the court adjourned the case's hearing to an unspecified date.
