4,839 vie for 556 medical college seats in city

KARACHI, Oct 7: Some 4,839 pre-medical candidates of a total 14,112 candidates from entire Sindh appeared in an entry test held at the NED university on Sunday to get admissions to medical and dental colleges of Karachi.

The entry test in Karachi was held simultaneously along with tests in other cities of the province — Jamshoro, Nawabshah, Larkana and Sukkur — for a total of 1,700 available seats in medical and dental colleges of the province for the academic session of 2012-2013.

Of these, some 228 open merit seats are available in the Dow Medical College and the Sindh Medical College each while there are 100 seats at the Lyari Medical College. A total of 556 seats in the three main government medical colleges of Karachi are available. The candidates reported to the test centre in Karachi at around 8am on Sunday for the two-hour duration tests that commenced at 10am sharp.A total of 4,905 students had initially registered for the test while 66 of them remained absent.

Of the 4,839 students who took the test, 88 were boys and 4,751 were girls.

According to a spokesperson for the admissions department at one of the colleges, the answer key is available on college websites for candidates to check their answers by referring to their carbon copies.

The results of the test will be announced in three days, on Oct 10, by the National Testing Service as it takes a little while to collect the answer books from all the five centres.

The academic session at all the colleges begins on Nov 1.
