KARACHI: The Citizen’s Committee appointed on Friday at the citizens’ meeting to try for a students-Government patch-up, called on Mr Afzal Agha, Commissioner of Karachi, yesterday afternoon.

Six out of 10 Committee members, headed by Mr Z. H. Lari, went in a deputation. The interview lasted about an hour.

The deputationists, presenting four demands on behalf of the students, pressed the Commissioner for their acceptance.

The demands related to the institution of a judicial enquiry into the student-police clash on Thursday last, “unconditional” cancellation of the externment order against 12 City students, their admission in the local colleges, and consideration of other demands such as the reduction of fees, etc.

Mr Afzal Agha assured the members of the Citizens’ Committee that he would convey their demands with his own views to the Provincial Government.

Joint statement Ten City students who called off their hunger-strike yesterday issued a joint statement in Karachi last evening.

The statement said: “We feel it is our bounden duty to express our sincere thanks to our fellow students all over Pakistan, particularly to our brethren in the Eastern Wing of the Country, for their valuable support to the students of Karachi, in our fight for the fundamental rights and privileges. Our special thanks are due to all the Trade Unions and other workers who have shown solidarity for our cause, even though they are fettered with restrictions like the usurping of the right to strike.

“We assure that the unity all of us have forged, will take us a long way in achieving our objectives. We pledge that we shall never lag behind whenever they put up a struggle against injustice and repression.

“We would be failing in our duty if we do not extend our thanks to our national Press which [has] given a very effective coverage to all the events and rendered very valuable support through their editorials.

We also thank the Citizens’ Committee for their help to the students.”—Staff Correspondent
