‘Robber’ dies of his own bullet

RAWALPINDI, Oct 4: A suspected robber was killed after his gun went off accidentally here on Thursday, police said.

Three armed men snatched jewellery and cash from women at Ansa Beauty Parlour on Girja Road. As they were escaping on their motorcycle, a cart pusher blocked their way. One of the robbers sitting on the pillion, who was later identified as Rahim Shah, tried to shoot the labourer. However, the bullet stuck in the chamber. Later, they got their way cleared and sped away.

But the suspected robbers suffered another setback when the motorbike tumbled while crossing a speed breaker. As a result, Rahim Shah, who was carrying the loaded pistol, suffered a jerk and the gun went off. The police said the bullet pierced into his body injuring him critically.

City Police Officer Azhar Hameed Khokhar said the two robbers took their injured accomplice to Military Hospital in a taxi from where they were referred to District Headquarters Hospital. On reaching the hospital, the injured died. In the meanwhile, some people chasing the bandits reached the hospital and caught them.

According to the CPO, the dead and the arrested robbers, identified as Ali Sheran and Akash, had been on the police wanted list for being involved in a number of other robberies.—Mohammad Asghar
