WORLD Cup events in every sport and their different categories (senior/junior, men/women, etc.) are held every fourth year.
The recent T20 cricket tournament (Sept 18-Oct 7) being held in Sri Lanka is not the official World Cup of cricket as is being frequently mentioned in some sections of the press, sports articles and also referred to by cricket analysts and former cricketers, specially in Pakistan.
The ICC too has not referred to this multinational biannual (20 overs a side) tournament as the World Cup in any of the press releases, official correspondence and on official website.
Instead, the official name of the tournament is ICC World Twenty20.
The official World Cup of cricket is a one-day quadrennial (50 overs a side) tournament and the winner of that tournament is designated as the official world champion of the game rather than the winner of ICC World Twenty20.
Moreover, a sport has only one legitimate world champion at a time. Media houses in Pakistan should be cognizant of the fact while (mis) quoting the ICC World Twenty20.
