LAHORE, Dec 29: Three-year-old bay colt, The Conqueror outclassed his six rivals to win the Khyber Cup run over 1400 metres during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

The even-money favourite, The Conqueror was second behind the leader, Snoopy in the initial stages of the race. He burst into speed in the straight and collared front-runner to finally defeat late rushing Democracy by two-and-a-quarter lengths. Blu’s Wendy finished third three-and-a-half lengths further behind while Bureaucrat completed the board, half a length back.

Owned by Syed Tasweer Hussain Shah The Conqueror was steered home by riding boy A. Imran clocking one minute 27 seconds on grass track. The feature event was the fifth race of the day in racing order, a class IV and V combined handicap race.

A race earlier bay filly Desert Lady, made a winning debut defeating another bay filly Fair Play by one-and-a-half lengths in the supporting event, a term race for two-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies over 1000 metres.

Bay colt Saqi was third, another four-and-a-half lengths behind while Key Guy Love completed the frame by a margin of half a length among seven runners. Owned by Raja Sher Mohammad Khan and trained by Mohammad Bashir Desert Lady was a three to one second favourite.

The best performer of the afternoon card was bay colt Flight Alert, who galloped home in a stormy fashion to win the third race. Owned by Sohrab Khan, the colt was backed at 80 to 100 favourite. He beat Blue Dawn by four-and-a-half lengths. Flight Alert clocked one minute 13 2/5 seconds over six furlong distance.

Jockey Salah-ud-Din II and riding boy A. Imran excelled in the saddle. The former rode three winners while the later brought in a brace of winners. Salah-ud-Din won on Flight Alert, Desert Lady and Great King in the third, fourth and sixth race, respectively, while A. Imran’s winners were Silver Charm and The Conqueror in the opener and fifth race.

Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards were not satisfied with the handling of fancied bay mare Hot Spell by jockey Azeem Pervaiz in the second race, who came third behind Show Counting and Decent Fellow. Azeem was questioned by the stewards and not being satisfied with his explanation they suspended him from riding for one month.
