ISLAMABAD, Dec 28: Prime Minister Mir Zafaruallah Khan Jamali has directed all the federal ministries, divisions and government departments to provide him an indepth briefing on their three-year performance, failures and achievements to help frame his government’s future policy.
Official sources told Dawn on Saturday that the briefings would be scheduled in January next to apprise the newly elected prime minister on the performance, achievements and future planning of each department as guiding factor for the newly elected democratic government.
The prime minister secretariat, through a letter communicated to all the ministries, divisions and federal departments has asked to submit their reports for presentation to the prime minister latest by Dec 31, said the official requesting not to be identified.
The ministries were directed to prepare comprehensive reports on their three-year performance and achievements for presentation to the prime minister.
They were also asked to make comprehensive reports on the reforms initiated in each departments, level of their implementation and recommendations and proposals for bringing improvement in the future strategy to be adopted to streamlining efficiency and working of all the government departments.
The ministries were also asked to point out all the bottlenecks in each ministries, which was creating unnecessary hurdles in the smooth functioning of the departments.
The military government following the take-over of the democratic government in October 1999 it may be recalled, had initiated large scale reforms in each and every department.
The major reforms were introduced in the field of economy, education, police, bureaucracy, including sacking of hundred of government employees on the grounds of corruption and mismanagement, establishment of brand new local government system, National Accountability Bureau, National Reconstruction Bureau, law and order, judicial reforms, civil service reforms, financial accountability, provincial finances, information technology and foreign policy.
The official, said that the reforms were meant to re-build national confidence and morale strengthen the federation, remove inter-provincial disharmony and restore national cohesion; revive the economy and restore investor confidence; ensure law and order and dispense speedy justice; depoliticise state institutions; devolution of power to the grass roots level and ensure swift and across the board accountability.
