Supreme Court reserves judgement in dual-nationality case

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday reserved the judgment in the parliamentarians’ dual nationality case, DawnNews reported.

The apex court is expected to announce the verdict in a day or two, sources said.

A three-member bench led by the Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry heard the dual-nationality case.

The chief justice said that there was no possibility that a dual national becomes part of the national security legislation.

The chief justice Chaudhry remarked on the occasion that the parliament should discuss amendments to the Constitution regarding dual nationality.

The attorney general also added that if someone obtains dual nationality after becoming a member of parliament, then he or she could be considered as being incompetent.

Justice Jawadr S. Khwaja emarked that there have been incidents where people have come to Pakistan to become the prime minister of the country and returned to their country of abode abroad after their tenure in power ended.

Justice Khilji Arif Hussain added that the rich are exporting their profits abroad instead of keeping it in Pakistan. Therefore, the remittances come from the labourers and the poorer workers who work abroad.

He also said that a British citizen considers him or her self a servant of the British monarch. Therefore, it is not possible for the same person who has taken an oath to the Queen to be loyal to Pakistan.

Furthermore, Qadir said that every Pakistani violates the law to which the chief justice replied that he appeared to be in support of violation of the law and the Constitution and added that the court was not interested in declaring anyone as incompetent.
