IJT demonstrates mob mentality

LAHORE, Sept 13: Activists of the Islami Jamiat Tulaba on Thursday torched a bus at Bhekewal Mor to let loose their indignation at the police who had roughed them up hours earlier.

The IJT activists had gathered on the road to demonstrate against the Punjab government and the police for failing to arrest the killers of Punjab University law college student Awais Aqeel.

The student-activists blocked road to traffic for a while, demanding that the police arrest the killers of Awais Aqeel. Chanting slogans, they moved from the Campus bridge and marched towards the Muslim Town police station to stage a sit-out.

A contingent of police baton-charged the protesters who retaliated, only to be arrested and stuffed into small police station rooms. PU IJT Nazim Rai Haq Nawaz negotiated with the Muslim Town police (the police station also houses the Iqbal Town SP office) and got all activists freed.

IJT spokesman Malik Arif Husain claimed that four of the protesters were injured during the clash.

The IJT activists, on their way back, stopped a public transport bus on Wahdat Road (Bhekewal Morr) and set fire to it after letting the crew and commuters disembark. Firefighters took some time to tame the flames.

Earlier, the IJT activists were charged with torching two buses on May 18, when they had staged a protest demonstration against the murder of Awais Aqeel at the PU New Campus hostel on May 13.

DIG (Operations) Rai Muhammad Tahir said the police would register a case against the IJT activists for torching the bus.
